Upgrades & Improvements: Adding Value to Your Mountain Home

Fall and winter are the perfect time to look around for projects that might increase your property’s value.

Jackson Hole and Teton Valley’s property needs and assets are unique. Homeowners here have to account for extreme weather and extreme hobbies — all of which are in full display in winter time. The colder weather offers plenty of inspiration for ways to enhance a mountain home.

And summer is the busiest selling season, so winter projects help you get ahead. Whether you’re looking to sell soon or just want to get the most out of your home, even small upgrades can add big value.

Winter Check List

First, consider practical projects to winterize your home. Is your HVAC system current and robust? Windows and doors are easy places to add value; check them for any drafts or weaknesses and consider if it’s time for an upgrade. Insulate any exposed plumbing pipes in unheated spaces like garages or crawl spaces.

Year-Round Warmth

While you’re at it, consider adding year-round utility to those classically cold storage spaces. A heated garage, or a garage with a heated floor, can double as a home gym and keep your snow equipment warm and dry between uses. There are few better luxuries for skiers and snowboarders than a heater specifically for boots and gloves.

Heated driveways and walkways add extra comfort and convenience outside, saving homeowners the hassle of having to shovel or plow.

For an extra touch of luxury and comfort inside, we love heated floors in bathrooms, mud rooms, and any other space where bare feet or wet gear might benefit from the warmth. Or, for a slightly less committal but still luxurious bathroom upgrade, consider a heated towel rack.

And of course, fireplaces are essential in a mountain town home. Wood stoves are classic and cozy, but electric stoves are increasingly efficient and much easier to use.

Storage is King

If there is one thing Jackson residents (and visitors) want more of in their homes, it’s storage. Garages are beloved and highly sought after. But smaller, thoughtful storage solutions go a long way, too. Consider how to optimize wall space in your home with things like ski racks, built-in shelves and cubbies. Storage spaces especially add value to a home if they are included in the home’s official floor plans, so it might be worth asking if you can sacrifice any spare space for, say, a walk-in closet or pantry. While external storage solutions like sheds may be useful, they likely won’t increase your property’s value. Think about how to make the most of the square footage you have.
